The element of self-identification in Johnson’s project is too obvious to ignore. Here is a maverick Tory politician, endowed in equal measure with fierce ambition, immense self-confidence and wide-ranging intellectual inquisitiveness; a man endowed with many obvious advantages in the great race of life, not only through innate aptitude but also through social privilege in his upbringing; a public figure with a populist touch that gives him brand-name recognition with the electorate. Everyone knows "Boris," just as everyone once knew "Winston."
