Hilary Mantel's Public Lecture Pitfalls

In her novels “Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up the Bodies,” Hilary Mantel has proven herself to be a master of insidious court intrigue, rampant backstabbing, and swift and ghastly justice meted out by the powerful. None of that, however, was likely to prepare her for the uniquely British press response this week to comments about the Duchess of Cambridge that came from a lecture Mantel delivered at the British Museum, and which has just been published in the London Review of Books.
