The thing about survival is that it just doesn’t mean anything. Not in itself. It just is. American ‘preppers’ might well have survived the end of this world on December 21 2012 but whatever new post-apocalypse society they are thinking of creating will be one they have to give meaning to. They will have to choose it. Simply being there won’t be enough to make sense of their world.
